10x10 and Wrap Up

Helmut Lang Coat (ebay) / Trina Turk Cashmere Sweater (thrifted) / Nine West Pants / Sam Edelman Boots (ebay)
AEO Hat / Fred Meyer Scarf (old) / Eddie Bauer Leather Bag (thrifted)

This outfit was one of my favorites of the ten, I really love this cap (I believe it's a baker boy cap from what goggle tells me but a lot of sources on goggle also try to say it's a Greek fisherman's cap but the details don't look quite right to me.) and I like how it looks with this coat.  I wanted to try to create a different vibe with this outfit since I was worried about it looking to alike to the other times I've worn these basics (coat, jeans, sweater, boots) and I really relied on my accessories to do that.  Looking back at the 10 outfits it was the accessories that really came through in making each outfit slightly different - I think picking only 6 actual clothing items such as two pants, two tops and two dresses really made me work harder at this 10x10!  I didn't even wear as many outfit as I could have, I worn my Joie blue top once and my Winter Kate dress once as well.  I feel like I could have gotten another four outfits easily.
The only item I did not enjoy wearing was my blue pair of Joe's Jeans.  They were a little big to start with and got really big by the end of the day, looking saggy even with long underwear on underneath.  I really like the look of light blue jeans but they are a little hard for me to get use to again after wearing black, high rise jeans almost exclusively for the past three years.   My favorite item is hard to pick, I  enjoyed my white cashmere Trina Turk sweater that I thrifted about a month ago, I love my Helmut Lang Coat that I found for cheap on ebay and I always enjoy wearing my embroidered Free People dress.  My favorite however, would have to be these Moon Boots.  I live in a very cold part of Alaska where our normal winter temps hit -55F easily and I've worn many pairs of winter boots over the years.  I've never had a pair of winter boos that I've like as much as these.  NEVER.  The only ones that come close are my Boggs insulated farm boots and that was because those were all season boots that I could do anything in - Moon Boots are a different beast than those. These boots are SO WARM.  I can wear thin cotton socks in -35F right now and my feat will be ROASTING.  I cannot do that with any other boots, including the infamous Bunny Boots.  The liner is like memory foam and the boot is so light on the feet, I feel weightless after wearing my Sorrel Caribous!  The only downside is that I had to relearn how to walk when I first got them, they are similar to wearing boats on your feet and I normally have a very narrow stride so I had to pay attention and walk a little wider so my feet didn't trip me up. (I went down at school in front of the first graders' windows the first day I got these boots. Oh boy.)   If you don't like big boots, these are not for you.  They are huge and here is nothing small about them.  I love big, chunky boots however and I really like the profile of these on the leg ascetic wise -  you have to really lean into the wintery look with them.  I liked how they looked with a sharp coat and a dress though, sort of a dressy, snow lodge sort of look.

Overall, I had so much fun with this 10x10.  I don't have an Instagram account because my phone is actually 3.2 billon years old and doesn't hold apps but I like to look every now and then.  I had so much fun looking through the #winter10x10 hashtag, it was like going back in time to the 2010 30x30s with Kendi and all of the people who use to participate in that!  That was such a great community and time for blogging and it's very exciting to see that sort of community popping back up again.  Lots of positivity and lots of just having fun remixing again which I think was a big draw for everyone back in those days of blogging.   It's just everyday women from all countries with different budgets, jobs, bodies and lives getting together and while it might sound hokey, it's really wonderful to see that side of blogging coming back around again.  I love it and I'm so happy to have been about to participate in this round.  Many thanks to all who jumped in and to the wonderful people of this community - you guys are source of brightness on the internet and now I feel like we need to go goecites 1999 and paying some inspirational music this site!
(I don't even know if this joke would make sense...I feel so old referencing geocities, even my spell check doesn't know what that is.)

Topshop fakefur Coat (thrifted) / Trina Turk Sweater (thrifted) / Joe's Jeans (thrifted) / Sam Edelman Boots (ebay)
UO Hat / Old Navy Scarf / Free People Bag (ebay) / Fred Meyer Mittens

I like these boots and this coat together although to be honest, I just really love these boots. I'm 5'2 and I like the proportions of over-the-knee boots on myself - it's a tiny bit of pretend visual height! This sweater has gotten A LOT of wear during the 10x10 and has since I bought it at the thrift store. I mentioned  why I liked it so much a few posts back but yeah, I think the ease at which it's worked it's way into almost every outfit says it all.

Now, my tale of woe.
I bought a pair five years ago a Fred Meyers and worn them every winter until a cold spat when I gave them to a kid without mittens at school.  No more cute mittens.  But wait!Fred Meyer's brought these mittens back again this last fall and I was once again reunited with my mittens!  Joy filled the land! The mittens and I were not parted... until One fell out of the car and I did not notice.

I am so sad.
Over a mitten.
I know, small problems.
But I loved these mittens.

I hope they get brought back again because they wore very well and kept my hands warm in the cold so they were cute and practical!  How often does that happen?

Topshop Fake Fur Coat (thrifted) / Trina Turk Sweater (thrifted) / Nine West Pants / Moon Boots (ebay)
Fred Meyer Mittens and Handmade cap

This cap was made by a friend of mine and it's super cute! It's not only my favorite colors, it's really soft and it's special to have something a friend made.  I really like the white fringe around the rim, it works well with the black and white color theme going on.

I loved this outfit! The sweater over the dress really worked with the coat and then the boots were all for warm feet.

Topshop Fake Fur Coat (thrifted) / Trina Turk Cashmere Sweater (thrifted) / Joe's Jeans (thrifted) / Moon Boots (ebay)

Woolrich Bag (thrifted) / Fred Meyer Cap

Well, this may not be my most stylish of all of the 10x10 outfits but it was relaxed for the weekend and the boots were hard to beat in the deep cold. This fake fur coat is also surprisingly  warm as well - the fake fur is long and there's a pretty decent lining sewn into the coat. With a cashmere sweater under this jacket, I didn't even feel like I needed to throw on the long underwear.
ended up only wearing long underwear under my jeans which is why they are such a sad mess fit wise.  I had liked the fit on these jeans when I first thrifted then but now I realized they bag out really badly by the end of the day and end up feeling super frumpy because they are in the gray zone of "are they skinny jeans, are they boyfriend jeans?" and it bugs me so much.  I'm either going to have to do some alterations, wait until they are a little more loos and pretend they really are bf jeans or send them back to the thrift store.

Helmut Lang Coat (ebay) / Winter Kate Dress (ebay, older) / Sam Edelman Over the knee Boots (ebay)

BCBG Hat (thrifted) / Free People Bag (ebay) / White and Warran Cashmere Cardigan (thrifted)

Well, I cheated this day. It was too chilly to wear this sleeveless dress under just my coat and my white sweater I'd intended  to wear over it was still drying from being washed. I threw on this cashmere cardigan I thrifted a while back, it's as long as the coat and provided  a lot of extra warmth. I think that is the one fall back to the 10x10 - I included my outerwear and footwear in the items so it left me with 6 actual items to wear and when it's both cold and something is washing, you have to compromise. I love the challenge of coming up with 10 different outfit from a limited amount of clothes, it harks back to days of Kendi's 30x30 which was a great time for blogging and being creative with your closet and it's also a guilty pleasure of mine - I love those articles  where a few items are remixed into tons of outfits and I wished magazines could maybe go back to those days. I also really enjoy seeing what's in people's closets and how they remix they're closet which was the biggest draw to blogging for me and still is. (Basically, I'm a werido.)

Topshop Fake Fur Coat (thrifted) / Free People Dress (ebay) / Sam Edelman Boots (ebay)

Fred Meyer Cap / Coach Bag (thrifted, gift)

As you might noticed from the posts, everything except for the Nine West pants from Sam's Club are second hand, either from the thrift store or the magical world of ebay. Shopping second has completely ruined me for paying retail prices, my first thought when looking in a store is "I can find this for way cheaper!" My pay per item limit is usually about $20 unless it's something I've been looking at for a long time or is a coat, shoes or a bag. In a run down of my 10x10 items, they are as follows:

Helmut Lang Coat on ebay = $39.99 + free shipping. This coat was a super score as Helmut Lang coat u

Helmut Lang Coat on ebay = $39.99 + free shipping. This coat was a super score as Helmut Lang coat usually go for far more in retail. I love the style, the workmanship and how warm all of my HL coats are so it's one the brand I really watch for.

Topshop Fake Fur Coat thrifted = $5.99
Trina Turk Cashmere Sweater thrifted = $2.49. This brand is nother that normally runs for a lot more but I have really good luck finding cheap cashmere at the thrift store. I've never bought a cashmere sweater retail so I get serious sticker shock looking at them!

Joie Embroidered Top = $7.49 + free shipping. You can find Joie shirts for dirt cheap on ebay! It's one of my favorite brands as I really enjoy the fabrics and details but again, I would never pay the $150-$250 that they normally run. I don't know why they run so cheap on ebay but they don't have nearly as high of a resale vaule as similar brands like Isabel Marant or Ulla Johnson.

Joe's Jeans thrifted = $5.49. I run between liking this brand and not but again, premium denim is something I have good luck finding at the thrift store. If not, ebay is another great place to find for very cheap if you are willing to wait a little bit.

Nine West Jeans, new from Sam's = $15. For being $15, these have been awesome pants that I've gotten a ton of wear out of.

Free People Dress from ebay = $23.99 + $3.49 shipping. I love Free People dress but yeah, not paying the $168 this dress ran in retail. It took waiting for six months after the dress sold out to find it at this price but I don't mind playing the long game. Love the embroidery on this and with the cut and the sleeves, it's one of my favorite dresses.

Winter Kate Dress from ebay = $39.99 + free shipping. This was a stupid good deal for this dress as it normally is listed around $100 resale but I love winter kate dresses and every now and then see them go for super cheap.

Sam Edelman Boots from ebay = $24.99 + $12.90 shipping. This was a lucky low bid that no one out bidded me on but Sam Edelman boot normally run very reasonable on ebay, as oppossed to thrift prices where SE is marked way up.

Moon Boots new on Ebay = $99 + free shipping. These are my most expensive item in the 10x10 and in my closet but I've wanted these boots for a while and had been saving up for them. Winter boots are worth spending on but as these are not sold in my town, the internet was my only option. I found a seller on ebay selling these brand new for what I felt was a reasonable price.

For 10 items inculding coats and boots, this is pretty reasonable! Right now 95% of my closet is second hand which I feel good about.

Helmut Lang Coat (ebay) / Joie Top (ebay) / Nine West Jeans / Sam Edelman Boots (ebay)

Old Navy Scarf / Leather Bag (thrifted) / BCBG Hat (ebay)

These jeans are the only clothing item I've bought from Sam's Club, I needed new black jeans since mine were either completely dead/way too big and these were $15. I mention Sam's Club because Fairbanks, Ak made national news a little bit ago when Sam's Club announced they were closing many of there stores nation wide and all of their Alaska store. No big deal, right?

Big freaking deal.

It wouldn't big a big thing if Alaska was like a normal state but for 2/3s of the state, Sam's Club in the only wholesale supplier. Most of the state is not connected by roads and for most of the villages, bush order is the only way to get grocery because they are hundreds of miles from the middle of nowhere. (Fairbanks would be the dead middle of nowhere.) This means people put in orders at the wholesale, these orders are packaged up and delivered by bush plans to the villages where a gallon of milk can be sold for over $12. The cost of living in Alaska is bananas and it's even worse out in the bush with no access to a grocery store and ONE STORE supplied all of the villages and all of the towns for most of Alaska, along with supplying most of the restaurants in the surrounding towns. (To get groceries to Fairbanks, the have to be loaded from port in Anchorage and either driven by road or rail 350 miles to Fairbanks, the largest town in the Interior of Alaska. It's a perilous position and Fairbanks stores only have three days worth of food on the shelves so it only takes an avalanche across the Parks Hwy for shelves to run bare and people to freak out.) Right now thanks to the biggest store disappearing, all of the orders from the villages, Tok, Delta, Paxson, Healy, Cantwell, Circle, Manley and all of the restaurants are now funneled towards Fred Meyers, Safeway and Walmart and none of the stores are set up to hold high volumes. Every store ran out of milk because all of the coffee shops suddenly had nowhere to get their dairy orders from! It's caused a huge upset in the Interior with rumors of a food shortage sending people in a panic. (Well, there was no milk and good luck finding chicken in town!)

It also has left a huge wave of anger over how Sam's Club has treated their employees  - no word was breathed of the closure until employees  came into word and were told they had no jobs left. In a town going through a severe  recession and the after-Christmas-tightening-of-the-belts-and-slashing-hours, no one has a chance of finding a job. Just another day that Walmart shows how much they suck.

The upside to this craziness?

Costco! They announced yesterday that they were coming to Fairbanks! Before the closure of Sam's Club, Costco had said they had no intention of coming but the tides have turned. Not only is Costco amazing in how they treat their employees (like actual people?) they are so superior to Sam's.

I don't really know what the point of this was, aside from illustrating the craziness and highs and lows that have been the atmosphere of the Interior of for the past two weeks.

For being from Sam's Club however, these pants aren't half bad.
