Black and Red

American Eagle Hat
Rick Owens Lilies Jacket (ebay)
H&M Dress (ebay)
Acne "Donna" Boots
Anthropologie Bag (birthday gift)

This outfit was from a much warmer day, right now I am pretty sure I would freeze in it!  The dress is just thin cotton so even with a heavier slip and fleece tights, it doesn't really cut the mustard past zero.  In my younger days when I couldn't feel the cold it might but as I get older I find myself really, really enjoying being warm!  My mom use to make me wear my snow pants in middle school and I remember being mortified about the whole thing - things apparently haven't changed because I see teenagers jumping off the bus during negative temps with only shorts on!  I can't even remember why it is so uncool to wear warm clothes......

Deep Frost

This past Saturday we attended my brother's wedding - it was completely adorable and the sweetest wedding I think I've ever attended.  I am so happy for the two of them, they are such sweet, funny and wonderful people and all of the best wishes for them.  Congratulations Morgan and Jared!
This is not what I wore to the wedding, it was a busy week and I was terrible about taking pictures.  With only an inch of snow on the ground and -20 temps, our waterline from the well house started freezing up so we had to pull the whole thing out and wrap heat tape around the pipe so hopefully it will stay flowing now.  With the real cold waiting to hit later this week we really didn't want to take any chances with the whole thing but uuugh, I am so happy it's done.

It's A Wood Pile!

Fred Meyer Hat and Gloves
Wool Sweater (thrifted - made in Juneau, Alaska)
North Face Fleece (very, very old)
Helmut Lang Tank (ebay)
J.Brand Maria Jeans (ebay)
Ugg Clog Boots (thrifted)

Sometimes I get lucky and find really amazing handmade sweaters in the men's section of the thrift store.  Usually those come home for my husband but this was one of the sweater that I ended up taking back from him.  It's huge so it doesn't really fit under jackets but I normally wear a few layers under and treat it as a coat, it's so heavy that it works!  This day I layered my ancient North Face zip up under it and stayed pretty toasty. I never really break out of my comfort zone with this sweater, normally styling it with black jeans like I have here.  I really am a one trick pony!

Put A Pom Pom On It

Old Navy Coat
Rick Owens Lilies Sweater (ebay)
Ralph Luren Cashmere Turtleneck (thrifted)
Eileen Fisher Silk Tank (ebay)
Vince Suede Leggings (ebay)

Sometimes people leave cold weather gear behind at one of my jobs, usually because they are only in Alaska for a few weeks and then heading back somewhere quite a bit warmer. Every now and then someone gives me their gear which is awesome, I'll take free cold weather clothes any time! This coat was one of these things, it's not a super warm coat on it's own but it dos a great job when layered and when it comes to saying warm, layering is the name of the gam.  All of the warm air trapped in-between each layer adds up and sometimes wearing four layers like I am here works better than a tee shirt and a bigger coat.  (Silk is a great base layer as it helps keep body heat in and unlike cotton, is very wicking.)

Peace To All

Hey al, hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving!

It's both the most dreaded day of the year for most retail worker, rude/sleep-deprived/angry customers and days that often start on Thanksgivings but at the same time, it's also time for dat overtime. No matter if you are out shopping today or staying at home chilling or like many of us,  have to go to work and don't get a four day weekend,  please be sure to treat retail and food service workers with kindness and respect. I am a big believer that everyone should have to work retail or food service at least once in their lives in only to create a little empathy and realization that those people are not everyone's' stress-relief squishy balls. (I have so many horror stories form my time in the trenches as do many!)  While I realize this sounds pretty preachy, it is. I don't talk politics on this blog because it's a nice place to have away from all of this but some of the huge issues this year were class, racism and elitism(along with many other dire issues) and the biggest place you can see that is in retail and food service.  It is rough out there and many are in the working poor which the US Census classifies as 1 in 3 families. (In a disturbing trend, it is at it's highest that it's been in 20 years.) Which please, is not the same as not having enough money to buy another large screen tv that month - it means many people work hard and struggle, bring in just enough money to pay rent and bills with nothing for food.  If, and I am not saying this to shame anyone, if you are feeling stuck and afraid during this election season because of the results and would like to take meaningful action, please considering donating time or money to The Food Bank.  There's many great charities out there but this one has been really overlooked in favor of Planned Parenthood and many other great operations.  Sometimes the most impactful thing on a person is just being able to have food and it makes such a great differences in children's lives.  In American 1 out of 5 kids goes hungry and guess what, many come from the working poor.   In Alaska, the amount of people needing assistance from the Food Bank has skyrocketed and is greater than it was during the Recession of 2007, this is common all over the US.

Have a great start to the Holiday season everyone, it is a time of joy, kindness and empathy towards our fellow man and that seems like one of the greatest things that could come out of this contentious election year. We can be better, we can make it better and the best way to create real change is KINDNESS TOWARDS EACH OTHER, especially if it is someone you find hard to care for. It is easy to love those like us, it takes real heart to love those you cannot agree with and it starts with small actions and love towards each other. Have a great Christmas season all, Americans have great hearts and what better time to start healing the fissures in our country than now?

Not Just Pipe Dreams

Free People Bag (ebay)

Whoa, Thanksgiving really snuck up this year, right? Ever since Halloween ended it's felt like time to put up decorations but we've been holding off because that's crazy. (It just feels like a good time to be festive.) Lots of cooking after work today and then the kids get a four day weekend, lucky them.

This is a pretty chill outfit, worn before the temps decided to go back to their normal -20F. Sigh. I feel a little spoiled after these past few nice winters we've had, I am not ready for -50f. Fairbanks in general really isn't we've had about an inch of snow fall so there is about zero snow pack. This is really bad because without an insulating layer of snow, the ground will freeze all of the way down to the pipes and they yay, broken ground water and sewage pipes. We're laying down another four bales of straw on our water line and are really hoping for a foot of snow.  Or that temps go back up to zero, we can roll with that.
