Last One For The Road

Fred Meyer Cap
J.Crew Coat (thrifted)
Isabel Marant Dress (ebay last winter)
Helmut Lang Jacket (consignment)
H&M Belt c/o H&M (2013)
Coach Bag ( gift- thrifted)
Rag and Bone Boots (Christmas gift)

I took a few days away from the blog, mostly on accident but also partly due to being busy with work/not having time or light for pictures/ and a fun little snow storm. We received between 15-19 inches (although I think it was more, the new snow was almost over my knees at our house) on Thursday and the roads were quite a messy with the high winds that blew up afterwards. My route to work consisted of me having to break trail through a super deep snow drift zone for a mile long stretch and I've never been so happy that my Explorer is a hearty little snow beast. (Although it's hard to beat an 1998 Expedition for a snow beast, you just can't get those stuck!) Roads around us are just now being plowed but I cannot complain, we were lucky enough not to lose power and now there's plenty of snow to insulate the water line/septic tank when the deep cold comes around. Hurray!

I hope everyone is having a fun New Year's Eve, we are rather boring and are just doing some fun fireworks for the kids, watching some movies and making some finger food for dinner. (Made of 98% organic fingers!) This outfit is from Christmas Day, I finally wore this beautiful Isabel Marant dress I bought last winter for really cheap - the neckline is gorgeous and the tiered skirt has a nice shape to it for being such light fabric. This coat is an old thrifting find and I always forget about how much I love the red, it looks so striking during the winter. These boots were my Christmas present and something I'd wanted for the past four years but had thought for a long time wouldn't suit me. One of the biggest things short people are told is "wear ankle boots with a dip or very low shaft or your legs will look stumpy!" Many ankle boots later, I will say that advice is utter garbage and higher shafts are better for short people. (That's what she said!) I think they give a better line to the legs and also work a lot better with a variety of silhouettes on the bottom.

Happy New's Year's everyone, see you in 2017!

Fred Meyer Cap, Scarf and Gloves
Wool Cape Coat (thrifted)
Vince Wool/Leather Sweater (ebay)
Free People Sweater (ebay)
Helmut Lang Leather Pants (ebay)
Leather Boots (thrifted - no label)

A lot of very dark blue and black in this outfit.....This coat is an old thrift store find, it's 100% wool and is a hybrid cape/coat thing.  It has really great lines and best of all, I can layer like a fiend under it. (A warm fiend!)

Not So Bad

Uo Hat
Buffalo Wool Coat (thrifted)
Rick Owens Lilies Cardigan (ebay)
Anne Klein Cashmere Sweater (thrifted)
Helmut Lang Top (ebay)
Rag and Bone Leather Pants (ebay)
Acne Boots (ebay)

Did you have a lovely Christmas? I hope so!

New year's is never really a big deal for us so aside from kids being out of school, it's back into the same old with us and bracing ourselves for the depths of winter now. January and February can seem bleak at times with temps plummeting to -60 F (without wind-chill) and it's so cold you can hear sounds for miles. We do try to get outside quite a bit, even in the cold, and enjoy snowshoeing and skiing along with the start of cutting the firewood for the next winter. We layer quite a bit to stay warm but even in that kind of weather, you can still enjoy the outdoors. I just finished Dan Simmons' The Terror about the lost Franklin Expedition in the search for the Northwest passage and now I don't feel nearly as cold. Just reading about them camping outside in sleeping bags, in the wind, in -100F in the best clothing 1847 cold offer (lots and lots of wool since English explorers had not yet realized they needed the expertise of the locals to survive and how wonderful and necessary fur parkas are!) It was an okay book, much better than The Abominable (same author) which was a fictional telling of an Everest summiting in 1926 and while it was great 1/3 of the way through, ended up falling to troupes and of course, Nazis as Yetis. Hmmp. I love reading about early aviation in Alaska, polar expeditions and mountaineering books, along I have the bad habit of reading them during the winter - reading about -100 temps, or in the case of the first Denali winter ascent attempt, -148F - leaves me shivering most of the time! I need to start reading them in the summer when it's warm but there's never enough time...

Christmas Eve -Embrace The Winter Coat

Fred Meyer Cap and Scarf
Muubaa Leather Jacket
Rick Owens Lilies Cardigan (ebay) and Rick Owens Mainline Dress (ebay) over Eileen Fiher Silk Tank(ebay)
Vince Suede Pants (ebay)
Jeffrey Campbell Boots (ebay)

As you can see, it was a little too chilly to just wear a leather jacket so I threw on my trusty Woolrich parka on top - it's not the cutest thing because it's my chore/shop work coat and it has oil stains that just won't come out but it is warm! Sometimes, you embrace the big overcoats and when it's really cold, there is no shame in that, warmth triumphs all!

I hope everyone is having a fun Christmas Eve, I'm at work and then afterwards taking the kids to North Pole's Santa Clause house for a visit with Santa - a yearly tradition for us and a ton of fun. Later we'll visit my family and then set pout reindeer feed to lure Santa in for Christmas stockings!

UO Hat
Scarf (made by me)
Rick Owens Lilies Coat (ebay)
American Eagle Embroidered Top
J.Crew Silk Dress
Jeffrey Campbell Boots (ebay)
Anthropologie Bag (birthday gift)

This dress builds up so much static cling, even with a slip underneth! I know people have talked about a spray called Static Off and I am begginging to think I'm going to need some if I want to wear this dress - it's just redicuiously cingy otherwise. Of course, it might be me, I've been so staticy that the other day at work, I had a light arc travel between me and a light switch. Hurt like a bugger and was a little freaky and then I was doing it all day long!
This was an outfit worn to watch the kids' Christmas concert,  I wanted something a little more festive than my vibe as of late (black with a dash of grey or navy!) so this mulberry dress with an embroidered top over it seemed fun.  I am rally in love with m Rick Owens coat, it's a nice variation of a regular pea coat and is just "off" enough that it adds a little edge of alternative to most outfits but it also blends into "mom" outfits as well.  The top over the dress isn't my favorite thing ever, it feels a little fussy and more like something I would have done a few years back - today I would have normally worn a cropped shirt or sweater over it and skipped the belt, I think that would have helped keep it from looking too 2012-ish.
