Spell Designs Skirt
I'm already getting some wear out of this Target bag and so far the body seems to be holding up pretty well. It makes for a pretty cute summer bag! This top was another thing I picked up in Anchorage, I actually found a couple really cute items at Forever21 that were decently made. It was only my second time ever shopping at F21 so my only exposure to how things were the items I bought two years ago or the things I've found at the thrift store. Most of the time the stuff I find at the thrift store is pretty ratty but I can't really speak as to how long or hard it'd been worn but some thing, like my jacket I wear all the time in the winter, have held up pretty well. I know they're fast fashion but it seems like if you buy the more expensive items and then take care washing them, the clothes aren't quite as terrible as people seem to go on about. Unfortunately there's still the sweatshop problem, we can say we want nicer, higher priced things but it's also kinda elitist to ignore that a lot of people do shop there because that's what their wallets can handle. I remember having very little extra money and if I'd wanted to buy a new shirt, it would have had to have been at thrift store or Forever21 prices.
I also went to Aerie to buy new bras and man, those lace bralettes they sell are the bomb! I'm a 34D and while they don't hold everything up to the heights of pushup bras (because really, we want our boobs by our ears apparently) they do a pretty great job of supporting. And they're just such pretty bras, in stores they had so many colors and styles! Fairbanks doesn't have a ton of places to shop and it's usually really hard to find my size in a style that's cute and not really granny bra-ish. (I guess I could order from this crazy new thing called the internet but I really prefer to be able to try on first.)

J.Brand Jeans (gift)
Free People Clogs (ebay)
I've seen this kimono on quite a few people around town and man, it's adorable on everyone! I like kimonos quite a bit (I'm sure no one noticed) but I also like them as a trend - they're just really easy to wear and they're one of those few things that actually looks good on everyone. (I'm talking to you patterned leggings, you are evil to people and you should be burned with fire.) This particular kimono is great because it does seem to go with everything, shorts, jeans and dresses and even though it's pretty colorful it seems to work with most colors. Aside from chartreuse because that shouldn't even be a color. I'm sorry, I know people like that but....it's like neon baby barf, it' just not a good thing.
Heh, suppose 've summed up some of my least favorite trends right there, patterned leggings and chartreuse. I think the BlackMilk leggings are kinda cool just because they are so out there but most of the leggings I've seen are these odd tribal inspired patterns and they are just one of those things that doesn't seem to work. Chartreuse, I've summed that up. The only other trends I think I've really hated were the captoes on shoes but I think that's maybe just me, I don't like the lines the captoe creates on a shoe. (Ugh, remember those really ugly, patent leather Chanel beige and black captoe flats that were super popular on the net about a year or two ago? Those should be burnt with fire, just like the leggings.)

Spell Designs "Dreamweaver" Bag (ebay)
Free People Sandals
The fires have really ramped up here in the Inteior the last week, with temps staying in the 80s and everything being pretty dry now the fires have caused evactuations of a few villages and homes along the Elliot Hwy. The Elliot Hwy is the only road north out of Fairbanks and is the hual road up to the oil feilds and Barrow. (It's been featured on Ice Road Truckers and it is a really gnarly road, this last spring it was closed several times due to blizzards, flooding and currently fires.) Most of Alaska is not accessable by roads so many villages are only reachable only by boat, snow machine, dog sled or bush planes which makes evacuations a really serious deal. The Nulato Fire was caused by a lightening strike and ended up surrounding the village of Nulato, about 100 villagers evacuated before firefigthers were able to turn back the fire and save the village. People were also evacuated from the village of Tanana and currently four firefighters crews, inculding on hotshot crew are still figthing that fire. We've been hosting a crew at work the past week so I've been going in every day with the kids to clean up rooms and help prepared meals. The Interior is suppose to get some rain later this week so hopefully that will help with the fires.
We can't thank the bravery of the fire crews enough, it's such a dangerous and difficult job and the remotness and size of many Alaskan fires only makes it more difficult. These people put their lives on the line each day they go out and we can't thank them enough for protecting our homes and lives.

French Connection Jacket
Free People Dress
Steve Madden Heels (ebay)
Okay, it ended up being too hot for the jacket by the afternoon but morning still felt a little chilly. There was ash all over the cars this morning and I've seen quite a few people walking around with masks today. The smoke has gotten pretty thick with about 0.8 mile visibility but it looked especially odd this morning, some mist was rising off the ponds and smoke had settled in thick blankets in hollows. Driving down the road at 5am felt like something out of The Mist, we'd being driving with okay visibility and then we'd going into a thick patch so dense we could only see about 15 feet ahead. It burnt off a little bit so now it's just really hazy.
On a cuter note, there's been a pregnant moose wandering around the back for the past few weeks and last week she disappeared. We just saw her yesterday with a new born calf in tow, he was the cutest thing with his gangly legs and new born reddish coat! He was jumping all over while his mom was drinking out of the pond and he almost fell right in - it was pretty adorable! We watched them for a while out the windows before they disappeared back into the woods, baby moose are pretty hard to beat on the scale on cuteness.
I've talked a few times about fireweeds being one of my favorite flowers but I realized I've never shown any pictures of it. We have just a few patches of them, it's not quite a prevalent as it is lower in the state but it's such a beautiful flower.

Anthro Elephant Jumpsuit (ebay)
DV by Dolce Vita Heels
Bag (made by me)
I actually bought this jumpsuit last winter but for some reason did a really bad job styling it for the cold and ended up never showing the pictures. (They were just and the bad hair days didn't really help.) It seems to be more of a warm weather garment because it's super cute with open toed shoes and sandals. I've talked before about really like animal prints and Winter Kate had a few items which had the cutest print ever - unfortunately I ended up missing out on all of them, I found this one after doing a elephant print search on ebay. Some times ebay throws you a bone and you find cute stuff you didn't even know you wanted! (Okay, that happens a lot.)
I took apart one of my woven bag and copied the pattern to make my own bag, I bought the fabric at a garage sale and hand sewed the whole thing in about two nights. (Haha, I ripped out my stiches so many times....) It's a really simple pattern, just putting two sides of fabric together and then sewing the strap along the sides to cover up my far less than perfect work so I went pretty simple on the embellishments. If I try another bag I think I'll add on a few things but it's not bad for a first try, as long as you don't look at the inside.

Forever21 Top and Skirt
Old Navy Sandals
There's actually a few Summit Lakes in Alaska but this one is located along the Richardson Hwy just past Isabel Pass in the Alaska Range. (These particular mountains are the HooDoo mts.) It's a glacier fed lake at about 3,400 feet elevation and is just a stunning view. The lake's pretty deep, I think between 250-300 feet and during the winter it's the location of Artic Man, a race and huge gathering of snow machiners. It's a big part of Alaska, particularly Interior culture and is an event people look forward to. (This site does a nice breakdown of the event!)
A few years ago the Gulkana river which feeds out of the south end almost flooded out the Richardson, it swept out the small bridge that led to the fish hatchery and almost took out the hatchery as well. We'd driven past it just a few hours before the road was closed that year, I'd never seen the waters that high, right up against the road and taking out the banks. The hatchery ended up being moved back and the corner that was cut under was filled back in and it ended up being okay during last year's flood.

American Eagle Dress/Tunic (from last ear but they have a similar one in stores now)
Old Navy Shorts
This kimono is one of my favorite, the print is really pretty, the silk is nice and it's super flattering on. It also has the bonus of having the longer sides in front which gives me a few ways to wear it. I wore it both ways this day and really liked both looks, I just twisted the front ends around and tied them in the back. This works with any of my longer kimonos and it's a cute little look over a longer shirt/tunic.
