A Taste Of The Weekend (or week, you know)

American Eagle Outfitters Hat, Kimono and Crop Top
Winter Kate Silk Shorts (ebay)
Free People Bag (gift)
Free People Clogs (ebay)

With the kids being out of school we've been trying to do some fun things during the day!  Yesterday we went to see the new Alaskan Dinosour exibit at UAF's Museum of the North, the exhibit had a few partial skulls, a excavating site for the kids to dig out fossils, lots of information about Alaskan dinosaurs along with fossils and casts of tracks.  It was pretty exciting for the kids, they'd been waiting for this exhibit for a while and I'm pretty sure the kid center was their favorite part.  (If you're in Fairbanks and would like to go, Museum hours are 10am-7pm and admission is $8 for Ak residents and $5 for kids, $15 for non residents and $7 for kids.)
A few days ago when it was really nice out we went to Pioneer Park, they have such a great playground for the kids we end up going every week.  I've talked about Pioneer Park before but it's such a great place to visit in the summer, I recommend it to everyone, even long time residents.  There's also mini gold, ice cream, train rides, a few museums and the Salmon Bake. (Which I'm sorry but The Salmon Bake really not worth the money, you can go up to Fox and visit the Turtle Club and have the best prime rib ever for the same price.)

Sent A Letter On A Long Summer Day

Urban Outfitters Hat
Spell Designs "Fleetwood Mini"
Free People Sandals
Spell Designs "Dreamweaver" Bag (ebay)
Smaller Necklace (thrifted) Longer Necklace (Sears - from quite a while ago)

I like this dress so much, the lace is so thick and very sturdy feeling, it's not flimsy nor do I feel like it will snag on anything(a problem I've had with a lot of lace) but.....I really hate the slip it came with. The slip itself is actually really nice, it's soft, a nice mix of cotton and spandex and it's pretty thick but oh wow, the lace dress clings to it like nobody's business and that makes the whole dress itself awkward to wear. It rides up, it clings in odd places, it just doesn't sit right. I think a slippery slip will make all the difference - polyester, thy time has come!

I couldn't really decided if I liked the dress better with or without a belt. Being shorter with hips makes me always feel like I must BELT ALL THE DRESSES! or I'll just end up looking lumpy but in this case, I think it looks better unbelted. The dress is cut from a pretty flat pattern with no darts anywhere so belting seems to just exaggerate that. I really like how the sandals work with this dress, now that I've got the sandals broken in a little bit more it doesn't take me quite as long to put them on, maybe a minute or two a pair which isn't bad considering all of the laces!

The Mornin' Sun Is Rising, It's Kissin The Day

Free People Hat Band and Dress
Fred Meyer Kimono (gift)
American Eagle Outfitters Belt
Ecote Bag
Free People Clogs (ebay)

These pictures really don't do this dress justice, in rl it's beautiful! The color is just gorgeous, sometimes I forget that I do like mint but it can be hard to find cute things I actually like in it.  This dress also fits really nicely through the bust. Sometimes Free People is really not good if you have a larger bust (or heh, anything bigger than a 30A) but this dress is magical in that it could fit most bust sizes and still be flattering. The straps make the neckline adjustable which is great if you're short. Sometime proportions can get messed up with dresses and the shoulder to neckline measurements can be normal on someone who's 5'7 and super low on someone who'd 5'2 and for some reason, Free People really likes their plunging necklines.  The tiny arts right along the neckline make it not so much a boob tent as it just flows over the bust really nicely.
Anyways, this dress is awesome and it's fun to have a different color to work with. I try to buy most of my basics in either black or brown so they work with everything and this usually includes maxis dresses, I want to be able to wear them with my more eccentric items and not look to terribly out there. It also makes putting outfits together way easier which I suppose is probably a "duh" thing to say, I'm pretty sure that's getting dressed 101.

Back From The Weekend

American Eagle Hat
Winter Kate Blouse (ebay)
Gap Shorts (thrifted)
Old Navy Flats (thrifted)
Free People Bag (gift)

Hi guys, I hope everyone had a nice extended weekend.  For some reason ours felt really long, we did a ton of yard work, regular work and bbq-ing. (Oh, what a rough life.)  My parents had the yearly Memorial Day bbq at their house and since we ran out of food at Mother's day, I brought a ton of side dishes this time around and....hardly anyone showed up!  It was just my parents, my brother and his gf and then our family.   There was so many leftovers, it's a good thing Evan's around to eat them all. (He's 6'4 and I swear, it's like feeding a starving pony every day - I don't know where it all goes.)  The kids got to run around and play in the pool and ended up getting into a water fight with their uncle - I think it was a secret ploy to wash the teal dye out of his hair!  (He'd lost a bet with his gf and ended up having to dye his hair.)

And The Beat Goes On

American Eagle Poncho
Free People Necklaces
Forever21 Dress (thrifted)
Free People Clogs (ebay)
Ecote Fringe Bag

Here I was all "I'm only going to buy basics this summer" and all it took was a cute poncho to break me of all my good intentions.

Good job poncho.

However, it seems like it is still almost impossible to find a simple, white chiffon tank top.   The strugglez, they are are real you guys.  (Not really.)

In The Spirit Of Things

Forever21 Top (thrifted)
Old Navy Dress
Spell Designs Bag (ebay)
Jeffery Campbell Heels

Hey, it's a long weekend, the kids are out of school, the days are hot and the kiddie pool is full!  (Full of those evil little water spiders that is.  I need a little goldfish net or something to scoop them out.)  Our dog finally realized she can swim, up until now she's just waded in the water but has been too scared to swim.  She fell in yesterday and now I can't get her out, she just paddles around the pond all day, following the ducks around.  She doesn't even want to catch them, she just follows them around and they mostly just ignore her, she thinks they're like her puppies or something.

I've worn this top before and I was getting ready to toss it into the donation bag when I decided to try it over a few things and realized it's adorable over maxis!  It was originally a little longer but I ended up turning it into a crop top and now I'm really excited to wear it with my other dresses.  speaking of dresses, I kept seeing people wearing these super cute, bohemian skirt from Target and because Target has a 30% off sale going on, I thought I'd look online and maybe see if I could find one.  Wow, you guys, Target has the most anemic website in the history of website.   Everything looks so blah and boring, I just skipped it.  (Good for the wallet though!)

Alaskan Style Trends

Urban Outfitters Hat
Love Culture Denim Jacket (thrifted)
Old Navy Blouse and Skirt
Free People Bag (ebay)
DV by Dolce Vita Shoes

Alaskan can be kinda weird when it comes to clothing trends, we're a lot quicker on picking up trends than we were before, only a few years as opposed to 20 year behind.   Trends vary from region to region, Anchorage is pretty cosmopolitan with a lot of fashionable people, the valley is well...the valley and the coast tends to be pretty practical.  Fairbanks is a mish-mash of this, we have some big stores so people do try to look cute but you don't see a lot of platform stilettos around.  Practicality is a big factor, especially with the winters being so harsh and most people just like being comfy. (So yeah, lots of pjs at Walmart.)  I don' get to visit Anchorage very often so I can't speak for them but I can tell you what Fairbanks/North Pole is wearing!

I know, you're waiting with baited breathe.

Fashion trend for Fairbanks, Alaska this year: maxi skirts.  Man, they are everywhere.   It's not like the stores have more of a selection than normal(they don't) but you can't swing a stick in town without whacking someone in a maxi skirt. Well, you really can't swing stick around without hitting people but......

I think people like maxis so much because they are comfortable and they look good on everyone, height, weight, whatever, a maxi looks good.  I don't looove my legs so on days when I'm not really feeling it, a maxi really helps.  They just look cute!   You don't even need to wear heels with them, I've seen most people wearing cute little sandals and with the variety of skirts out there, it's pretty easy to find one that doesn't pool on the ground if you're short.  A good way if you're shopping online and want to know if a maxi will be too long: measure from hips to feet and then compare that measurement against the lengths posted.  Most sites will post lengths and if they don't you can always email customer service.

Anyways, maxis.  They're comfy, you don't have to worry about wind or flashing people and the skirts are actually just as comfortable and cool in the heat as shorts. Just check the material, cotton blends or light silk are really nice and while you have to be careful with it, chiffon is really nice as well. (Just watch out for what the lining is made of!)
