Hiatus

Hi guys.  I figured I   should be half way polite and pop in to say I'm taking a short hiatus from the blog.  My godfather passed away and it's been rough to deal with.  I'll be back in a little while.  Thanks.

Bright Forcast

American Eagle Outfitters Denim Jacket
Forever21 Silk Dress (thrifted)
G.H.Bass Shoes (thrifted)
Leather Bag (thrifted)

The belt was a last minute addition to the outfit and it doesn't really work.  I'm trying to get better about outfits not being "fussy" and in this case, I should have just worn the dress and the jacket.  At least it's not that much longer to bare legs!  I am so looking forward to 80 degrees but the 50 that's in the forecast for the entire week looks pretty nice.

In The Soup

American Eagle Outfitters Denim Jacket, jeans and bag
Joie silk Blouse (ebay)
Report Boots

It's  spring time here, the temps have been in the high forties and everything is melting.  Unfortunately, it's making getting to the highway a major adventure.  We keep our little road plowed this winter and only had four inches of hard pack and when the dozer was out, scrapped that off as well but the main dirt road that leads to the highway was plowed only twice this winter.  There's about 16 inches of hard pack on it that is pure slushy soup right now and man, is it ever a pain trying to get out.    Hopefully it will all melt off this week and we'll start seeing some gravel.

It is nice breaking out the spring time clothes and putting away all of the winter jackets, I'm starting to feel human again.  I just want to wear sandals!  My Michael Kors sandals broke last year so I replace them with two pairs, a leather Steve Madden pair and some cheapies.  Sandal wearing season is pretty short so two is the max that I can bring myself to buy, I just don't get enough wear to justify any more.  (Silk blouse are totally different.)

New Roads

Fleet St. Coat (about 12 years old)
Skull Tee (thrifted)
Free People Skirt
Leather Boots (thrifted)
Pendleton Bag (consigment)

This past weekend everyone chipped in to rent a dozer,we're all putting in our driveways and clearing the houses' pad.  Ev and I have been working on clearing the trees from where we're putting in our house, this is actually the new driveway in the pictures! (It's a soupy mess right now with breakup going on.)  Next we need to lay the tpar and put in the gravel pad and after that pour the concert.  We're hope to get that finished up this summer, because Ev and I are building our house out of pocket it's going to be a few years before we get to the finished project.  After budgeting out everything, concrete, gravel, logs, mill, lumber, roofing and material plus a new well and a septic it's going to be about $40,000 which is A LOT but with what we paid for the property, it's still going to be about 1/4th of what most houses go for on the Fairbanks market.  By the time the new house it built the land will be completely paid off so we'll be in the free and clear.   It's a lot more work this way but we're both hard workers and it's going to be really rewarding.

The sun is staying up later which is awesome, right now it doesn't get dark until about 9:30-ish.  In June we'll have daylight almost 24 which is wonderful, the long summer nights really makes up for the two hours of daylight during the middle of winter.  There's just something about sitting out on the porch at 11:00 at night and the sun's still out.

Springtime

Jacket (thrifted - no label)
Elizabeth and James Silk Dress (ebay)
Seychelles Boots
Pendleton Bag (consigment)

Over at Creamer's Field again, the crews just started plowing the snow to it will melt a little quicker because the first geese of the season were spotted just last week.  This is a major stop in their migration and in the springtime this field it filled with geese and sand hill cranes.  We actually have a pair of sand hill cranes that spends every summer on our property, they're serious jerks to the few ducks that hang out on the pond! Always chasing them around and harassing them.

Izzy and I saw two snowshoe hares yesterday, we were playing around in the woods and two hares came racing out of the underbrush, chasing each other around.  (It's that season...)  I know they get into the garden but I really like having wild rabbits around, there was always a ton of wild rabbits on the mountain at Crown Point so seeing them makes me a little nostalgic.  I had two bunny as a little girl and being super orginal with names, named them Aunt Shirley and Uncle Tom.  One day the neighbor's wolves broke into the  bunny pen and while Aunt Shirley escaped, Uncle Tom wasn't as lucky.  I remember bursting into the house, "Uncle Tom's dead!  Uncle Tom's dead!" and there being some confusion.  I didn't name any pets after family members after that.

Light Snow

Herman Kay Wool Coat (thrifted)
Sweater (thrifted)
Rag and Bone Jeans (ebay)
Report Leather Boots (thrifted)
Pendleton Bag (consigment)

This is a pretty simple outfit, a sweater and a pair of jeans and once I take off the coat, hat and set the bag aside, there's not a lot of visual interest going on aside from the embroidery on the jeans.  I'm not really sure if it's worth a style post aside from the fact that I like simplicity, it's nice to strip away the fussy-ness.

And some days you just need to put clothes on.  It's hard to be a nudest in Alaska.

High Moon

Old Navy Shirt
American Eagle Outfitters Jeans
Leather Boots (thrifted)
Pendleton Bag (consigment)

This is a work outfit for me, its easy to move in and I won't feel too bad if I damage the shirt of these jeans.  My work wear tends to be pretty boring, it need to be practical and I'm not dressing to make a statement aside from "I'm strong, I can totally hold this sheet of sheetrock in place on the ceiling while you dink around" or "I don't care how pissy you are pony, you are going to be NICE to your little girls."  (My wardrobe evidently is a smartass.)   The jewelry and hat are later-in-the-day additions, I don't wear jewelry on jobs aside from small stud earrings and I tend to wear a beanie pulled low. (The beanie is because I HATE spiders in my hair. Have you ever had a daddy-longlegs or a wold spider fall into your hair and then try to get it out?  IT FREAKS ME OUT.  So I wear a beanie, even in summer.)

Into The Wild

Forever 21 Jacket (thrifted)
Old Navy Tee
Free People Skirt (thrifted)
Report Leather Boots (thrifted)
Leather Bag (gift)

I guess I make really grouchy faces when the sun's bright, sorry about that.

I finally snapped some decent moose pictures on the camera, most of the time I'm using the 50mm/f1.8 lens which isn't so good for distances and because the moose usually hang out in the field, the pictures are poor quality.  This guy was standing in the middle of the road and while we were waiting for him to take his sweet time getting over, I got a few pictures. (Moose are just cute.  Those big noses and ears!)

I really enjoy wildlife/landscape photography and while the 50mm/f1.8 lens is great for outfit pictures, it's not so great for other stuff.  I've been thinking about buying a new lens and I'm trying to decided which one would be the most versatile.  Lens get pretty pricey, the 50mm.f1.8 is one of the cheapest at around $100 but a decent lens for landscape can run between $500 to $1000.  That's a big chunk of change and I'm going to have to do a lot of research before I purchase one. (And a lot more saving up!)

Since I accidentally mention it with the title, the hero worship regarding McCandless is such bull.  He was a selfish, egotistical idiot who thought he could go into the middle of the wilderness with nothing and survive.  He didn't and the face that he didn't shouldn't be applauded as "heroic."  If people want to talk about people who felt a true connection to the land and had enough repect for it, they should talk about The Bear Man of Admiralty Island ,  Dick Proenneke or any number of individuals.  Alaskans with outdoor experience have a pretty low option of of the aforementioned McCandless, every year in Healy we'd have to mount rescue missions to save hikers following in his footsteps, it's gotten so dangerous and to the point that hikers are now charged for rescues.  (As example of how clueless McCandless was, he shot a caribou and thought it was a moose.  He then wasted almost all of the meat because he never cared enough to learn how to take care of meat and butcher.  Pretty disrespectful of an animal to just kill it and let the meat rot.)

Alright, I'm a grouch.

Cold Day In July

Forever 21 Jacket (thrifted)
American Eagle Outfitters Dress
Report Leather Boots (thrifted)
Coach Leather Bag (thrifted)

Well, we thought we were going to get an early summer but nope, snow's back! Heh, at least this means I don't have to rack the yard yet!

This dress is another thing in my closet that I'm trying to decide if I should donate it.  I actually really like it but I can't really think of any ways to style it aside from jackets and I haven't worn it in quite a while.  I'm really want to pare down my closet so if I'm not wearing something, I don't want it in there.  That gets hard when I come to an item that I like but don't wear very often.

Purple People Eater

Talbots Trench (consigment)
J.Crew Cashmere Sweater (thrifted)
Aeropostale Overalls
Report Leather Boots (thrifted)
American Eagle Outfitters Bag

The shade of dye I usually by was sold out in my regular brand so rather than be a normal person and wait, I tried a new shade and brand. (The roots were getting bad and I really dislike exposed roots.)  I followed the instructed, waited the correct amount of time, washed off the dye, let it dry and O.M.G.  It was bright PURPLE.  Purple people!  Not even like a cool shade of purple either but this weird, redish-purple that just looked awful.  It was too late to buy more to I use kept trying to wash it out, hoping it would fade or something.  The next morning, it looked totally normal.  A little brighter than normal but not purple.  So either the dye is funky, I'm going colorblind or my lights are evil.

And that is my not so interesting hair dying story.
