Polar bear warning

Fur Vest: Rachel Zoe (thrifted)
Sweater: J.Crew Cashmere (thrifted)
Jeans: American Eagle Outfitters
Boots: Rampage (Fred Meyers)
Handbag: Micheal Kors (thrifted)
Scarf: American Eagle Outfitters

Only 3:15 in the afternoon and the moon's already up.  Yup, at this rate I'm really going to have to figure out how to shoot pictures in the dark.  The sun isn't rising over the horizon until past eleven in the morning so we're down to only a couple hours of sunlight each day.  The loss of light during the winter really doesn't bother me, I love seeing the moon and it actually makes outside activities seem a little more special.  Riding the horses in the late afternoon with the moonlight reflecting off the snow is one of my favorite things, it always feels like such a special moment.  We use to play hide and seek in the dark during the winter and in the woods it's one of the scariest things!  I have quite an over active imagination so I've always been a total chicken in the dark and with how sneaky Dad is in the woods, I'd end up just screaming my head off rather than running for home. (I'll admit right away that I'm not going to hang around when things get hairy in the dark.  One time a friend and I were walking outside of camp in the dark when we saw a big shape across the path, she yelled "Katie! It's a-" and I was gone.  It ended up being the woodpile.)

This is such a simple outfit but I love it!  I've been struggling trying to figure out how to style this vest. I got it last summer at the Salvation Army and even though it would probably look better on someone taller than I, I couldn't past it up for a few dollars.   It does look bulky on me when it's open and a thick belt just adds to the polar bear affect, but a thin belt seems to work.  (And I have to say, this vest is WARM!  Way better than a little polar fleece vest.)

  1. Cute vest and I like how the pink brightens the whole outfit. I can imagine taking photos with such limited daylight must be a challenge! I have enough trouble as it is. :-)

  2. BEST OUTFIT EVER. I love that vest so much (i really need to go thrifting!) and I like how you wore it with the pink jeans. This is such a fun (and warm) look. That last picture of the moon is so awesome, whenever I try taking pictures of the moon, the moon turns out really really small. But wow I can't believe it gets dark by 3:15! I guess it's because I haven never really been more north than Vancouver (and I went in the summer...) haha I would be screaming my head off too since the woods+darkness is such a scary combo.

  13. ... and now I feel awful for complaining about it getting dark at 4:30 here. At least we get light early in the morning. On the bright side, we're getting closer to the winter solstice, so pretty soon the days will start getting longer again, instead of shorter. Love those hot pink pants with the furry vest. A very awesome, but unexpected combo. Hope you had a great thanksgiving!

  15. I love that moon shot! Goodness, here, it's super dark at 5:00 already, and I wish there was snow already so that there would at least be some light. Ok, maybe I'm not wishing for snow because that means ice. Just more light.

I totes love how you wore that vest! I have been wanting a furry vest for a very long time now, but just haven't been able to find one that I like. Belted looks tres chic!

  18. it's a fun vest, and that it's warm is a total bonus! i liked reading your stories. moonlight horseback riding does sound magical. when we were little and played hide n-seek in the dark, we called it "ghosts in the graveyard."

  23. I like how you've styled this vest. A slim cable-knit keeps some shape up top while also adding a fun, winter-appropriate texture (thrifted cashmere from J Crew....are you KIDDING me??!! I bow down).

Anyways, I see your vest is from Rachel Zoe, which got me thinking about how she would style it, which got me thinking...open over a maxi dress, and maybe your wide-brimmed floppy black hat? She'd go sleeveless but someone would have to be done in the Alaskan cold! I could also see this working with a kind of retro 70s style - button down shirt, high(er)-waisted flared jeans and a pair of brown boots or clogs?

And when you eventually tire of the vest, you could go the polar bear route and turn it into a Halloween costume for your kids!
